Knowing how to get around Tenerife is key to making the most of your trip. It can be a bit of a search, so we have a few tricks and tips to help you out.
1. Rental car: Freedom to explore
If it is within your budget and wishes, we would always recommend renting a car. It is probably one of the most popular and flexible ways to explore Tenerife. You’ll be able to visit different villages, beaches, and national parks at your own pace.
- Benefits: You can get away from the crowd, discover hidden gems, and visit remote areas like the Teide National Park or the less-touristy northern coast.
- Tips: Tenerife’s roads are well-maintained, but be mindful of narrow mountain roads and parking in busy areas. Also: try and stay away from busy roads during rush hour if you don’t want to spend much time in traffic jams.
2. Public Transportation: affordable and efficient
Tenerife has a public transport network, mainly consisting of buses operated by the company TITSA. Although the options on busses are plenty, the communication could be better. Delays won’t be shown at the busstop, neither does the busstop communicate the name of the stop. Google maps is your friend (see tips)!
- Benefits: Public buses are affordable, with routes connecting major towns, cities, and attractions, such as Santa Cruz, LaLaguna, and Los Cristianos.
- Tips: Get a “Ten+ card” for discounted fares, and check the schedules in advance, especially if you’re planning to go to more remote areas.
- Tip 2: We recommend using google maps. You just fill in where you want to go and from where and it will tell you which busses you can take at which bus stop. It will also give you a live view of where the bus is driving. So if you don’t know where to get out exactly, just keep track of the busstops on your screen to know when to push the stop button for yourfinal destination.
3. Taxis: convenient and fast available
Taxis are everywhere across Tenerife and can be a convenient option if you’re traveling short distances or don’t want to rent a car. However, it’s important to note that many taxis only service specific regions, so not all taxis will take you to every part of the island.
- Benefits: You can easily find taxis in touristy places, at airports and popular beaches. They’re metered, so pricing is pretty straightforward.
- Important to Know: Taxis are usually restricted to operating within their own municipality, meaning they may not be able to take you far outside their area. If a taxi drives past you without stopping, it could be because they don’t serve your destination area, so don’t be surprised if that happens.
- Tips: If you’re going on a longer trip, you can negotiate a fixed price with the driver. Most taxi drivers only speak Spanish, so a translation app can be useful.
4. Biking: active and eco-friendly
Cycling is a great way to explore certain areas of Tenerife, especially along the coast or through the towns.
- Benefits: It’s an eco-friendly, healthy option and you can rent bikes in many tourist areas. Coastal roads and trails offer amazing views and the mild weather makes biking enjoyable year-round.
- Tips: Tenerife has mountains, so be prepared for challenging routes if you want to go inland. Also mind that Tenerife does not have many designated bike roads. Stick to the flat areas or coastal routes for a safe and fun ride.
5. Scooter or motorcycle rentals: fast and fun
For those who prefer a bit of speed and flexibility without renting a car, scooters and motorcycles are available for rent.
- Benefits: Scooters are easy to park, and perfect for going around town or exploring the coast.
- Tips: Make sure you have the right license and always wear a helmet. Some roads can be steep and winding, so be cautious, especially in rural areas.
6. Walking: The best way to explore the local areas
In cities like Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, and Costa Adeje, walking is one of the best ways to get around and soak up the local atmosphere.
- Benefits: Walking is free, environmentally friendly, and allows you to discover hidden corners, local shops, and restaurants at your own pace.
- Tips: Wear comfortable shoes, and bring a hat and sunscreen, as Tenerife can get quite sunny, even in winter.
Final Thoughts
Whether you prefer the freedom of a rental car, the convenience of public transport, or the adventure of biking, Tenerife offers a variety of transportation options. Most important though: no matter how you choose to get around, make sure to take your time and enjoy the scenic landscapes!
